Hoʻākea Honolulu at Mauliola
Ho’ākea Honolulu at Mauliola: Lā ʻOhana / Family Day took place on December 6 at the Marine Education Training Center. This free, hands-on family event invited keiki and families to learn about the history and moʻolelo of Mauliola while connecting with the ocean and ʻāina. Community waʻa and mālama ʻāina groups shared the navigator mindset and indigenous knowledge from mauka to makai.
On December 6, Ho’ākea Honolulu at Mauliola welcomed families for a morning of learning and connection at the Marine Education Training Center on Sand Island.
This free Lā ʻOhana / Family Day centered on the history and moʻolelo of Mauliola and the relationship between people, ocean, and ʻāina. Community waʻa and mālama ʻāina groups offered engaging, hands-on activities that gave students and families a chance to explore the navigator mindset and indigenous knowledge from mauka to makai.
Participating waʻa included Kānehūnāmoku, Kiakahi, Kūmau, Mānaiakalani, Mauliola Keʻehi, Moʻokiha ʻŌ Piʻilani, and others.
The day was part of the larger Ho’ākea Honolulu program, which ran December 2 through 5 and brought students from elementary schools across Honolulu to Mauliola for hands-on learning before the community Family Day.
The event was sponsored by the Hawaiʻi State Department of Education, in collaboration with Mauliola Keʻehi, the Polynesian Voyaging Society, Education Incubator, and partner organizations.
